Open to the public for three days, from Friday to Sunday, this popular annual event features leading art and antique dealers from across Britain.

The selection of instruments belongs to antiques dealer Fred Nickson of Chiltern Antiques from Henley-on-Thames, a specialist collector of the unusual and bizarre. Among Fred's display will be a doctor's portable leather homeopathic medicine case, complete with 48 bottles of various pills, dating from circa 1920. Such a case would have been carried by doctors attending patients and administered directly after a diagnosis, long before patients were expected to queue at the local chemist. It is priced at £285.

Fred will also be showing a late Victorian brass and copper auto clave (dental press), complete with dental plates, used to take impressions of the patient's mouth and teeth in order for dentures to be made to size. Other exhibits include various dental implements for extractions, teeth scrapers, early blood pressure monitors, optical instruments, scalpels and bone saws.

Medical instruments are one of the most misunderstood and least appreciated fields of collecting. The vast majority of old surgical instruments found today can be traced back to the time of the Napoleonic Wars from 1792-1815, when on-the-spot surgery and medical assistance began to become standard practice for injured soldiers. Knives, tourniquets, saws, forceps, gunshot probes, scalpels, ligature silks, and needles were common items in the medical boxes of surgeons and doctors. Most instruments were made from metal, usually with crosshatched ebony handles to provide a firmer grip. Others have mother-of-pearl or gold-trimmed handles for durability and also to show their value in the hands of an accomplished and wealthier doctor. The more impressive the instrument, the better the surgeon - you hoped! Around 1867, antiseptics were introduced and instruments were generally made entirely in metal for the purposes of hygiene.

Also showing at this popular annual event will be dealers offering all kinds of collector's items, art and antiques. They include newcomer Tom Johnson from The Collectors Gallery from Broadway, the grandson of well known gallery owner John Noott, Candice Horley from Surrey, specializing in 19th and early 20th century porcelain figures and French decorative boudoir prints; Brian Ashbee from Bristol promises period furniture, objets d'art and fine paintings, Brian Chew from Dorset with early English oak and country furniture, Melody Antiques from Cheshire with Georgian and Victorian period furniture, Parkstile Antiques from Surrey with silver, Roger de Ville from Staffordshire specializing in English pottery, The Period Face with English portrait paintings and Scarab Antiques from London, specializing in 19th and 20th century jewellery, enamels and 20th century glass and ceramics.

The Westonbirt School Antiques & Fine Art Fair is a must for collectors and anyone looking for a special piece of antique furniture or painting to adorn their homes. 'We've got something for everyone,' says organiser Sue Ede of Cooper Antiques Fairs from Somerset. 'With prices from less than £30 to more than £10,000, we cater for connoisseurs, collectors and first-time buyers.'

DIARY DETAILS
The Westonbirt School Antiques & Fine Art Fair
Westonbirt, near Tetbury, Gloucestershire GL6 8QG
Friday 14th - Sunday 16th August 2009
11am - 5pm daily.
Admission: £5.00.
SPECIAL INVITATION - Complimentary Tickets - Click Here.

We're Back!

Due to a technicality our BLOG has been offline for a few days, so we'd like to offer our apologies to anyone who has logged on and not found a link to this page. The Braderie de Lille is Europe’s largest flea market.

During the weekend of 5th and 6th September 2009 more than one million visitors will once again stroll up and down the city streets, entertained by music and the numerous performances that take place continuously from 2pm on Saturday to 11pm on Sunday. Enjoying a dish of “Moules and Frites” (mussels served with chips) has become a deeply-rooted tradition and is the subject of a contest between the town’s restaurants to see who can build the highest mountain of empty mussel shells!

Lille Braderie offers:
33 continuous hours of treasure hunting, bargaining and fun.
100 km (60 miles!!) of stalls.
10,000 exhibitors
Over one million visitors.
Over 500 tons of mussels to be consumed.

In France, “brader” means “to sell at a low price” and it is well known that you can sell and buy anything at the Lille flea market such as antiques, clothes, jewellery, decorative objects, etc!

Transformed into one gigantic pedestrian zone, the city offers treasure hunters and visitors alike a vast number of stalls and buying opportunities in a friendly atmosphere governed by the rhythm of the swarming crowd. Ever since the Middle Ages, the tradition has lived on, and today, the Lille flea market remains the most awaited event of the fall season.

Finding your way around.
Antiques (furniture, bibelots, crockery, collections, etc.) can be found on the Esplanade (alongside the Deûle canal, in front of the Champ de Mars).

In addition to Boulevard Louis XIV, rue Debierre and rue du Réduit, Boulevard Jean-Baptiste Lebas is exclusively reserved for antiquarians.

Nothing compares to the Sunday morning atmosphere in Wazemmes when the flea market blends with the lively, colourful market of the Place de la Nouvelle Aventure.
Along Boulevard Victor Hugo and in the Moulins district (rue d’Arras, rue de Douai, rue de Cambrai et rue de Maubeuge), the inhabitants hold a true garage sale.

The narrow streets of Old Lille are divided between the stalls of designer shops and those of private residents.

Finally, between the Porte de Roubaix and the Opera, the Arts district welcomes about thirty professional antique dealers from England and Burgundy. You will recognize them by their flags flying on rue Léon Trulin, rue Anatole France, rue des Arts and rue de Roubaix.

Getting around Lille
During the flea market access to the heart of the town is impossible by car. Therefore, it is best to take the train and use public transportation. Regional trains, the subway, buses and trams will get you where you want to go.

Where is Lille?
Lille is in northern France, about 50 miles from the ferry port of Dunkerque or 70 miles from the ferry port of Calais and the Euro Tunnel terminal road/rail link, which connects to Folkestone, England. Alternatively, direct high-speed passenger rail services operate from St. Pancras station London, England to the centre of Lille in just 90 minutes or less.

Thanks to Lille Tourism Office in providing images for the above album.

Antiques Web Sites

I’m a great believer that that there is no such thing as a free breakfast, but there are some good, even excellent offers or deals to be found. Whether you’re in the supermarket doing the weekly shop or just browsing for a weekend break, something will usually leap out at you. Buy 2 get 1 free for example is one of the more common calls to attention we hear.

When it comes to promoting a web site, offers become a little more, shall we say not so forthcoming? So you might be surprised to hear that we are actually offering a link to any antiques related web site for just £2 for a full 12 months, yes a whole year!

OK, I hear you say, there’s got to be a catch. Hmm, well no. None at all in fact.

Earlier this year we launched our Great British Antiques Fund Raising Challenge 2009 and to help us support this we decided to create a web page with simple to navigate links to antiques related web sites.

It’s a win, win situation for anyone in the antiques trade who agrees to join us. We create a logo/image free of charge and place it into a vacant space in the grid on our page. The more sites we list means the page generates greater popularity with search engines, more collectors and dealers find us and so it spirals.

We simply ask for a minimum £2 donation to our chosen charity, The Childrens Hospice Southwest, to whom all proceeds go. In addition to this, if the donor is a UK taxpayer the donation is further enhanced by up to 28% under the Gift Aid scheme.

Want to know more? Please click on the Web Links image in this posting to visit our special page. CLICK HERE.

The Childrens Hospice Southwest, has a very poignant saying, ‘Making the most of short and precious lives’, and I think sums up very well all they do. There are tins in shapes of seaside pails, sets of library books, sundials and pedestals.

There are starched white smocks from the widow’s hovel who took in washing, wonderful netted hats and gloves from the Glover and Milliner, and all sorts of tools used by the Carpenter, the Saddler and the Odd Job Man. The Tobacconist’s shop is full of vesta cases and pipe accoutrements . The Corn Merchant’s store is full of the belts that drive the barn machinery alongside a huge selection of mowers. Peer into a small window to find the Clogger and Cobbler shop bulging with ladies’and gentleman’s leather shoes, shoe horns, etc.

Colourful and comical metal advertisement signs such as Colman’s mustard, Cadbury’s chocolate and fuel and agricultural signs can be found in abundance hanging inside and outside each shop as well as china figures which were often put into windows and hung above doors so people who couldn’t read could identify the shop easily.

For more information contact Simon Chorley Auctioneers, http://www.simonchorley.com/

Galloway Antiques Fairs

The organisers of the antiques fair scheduled to be held at Cranleigh School, Cranleigh in Surrey over the Easter weekend 10th - 13th April 2009 has been cancelled. It is also larger than any other known egg, including dinosaur eggs. The Elephant Bird (Aepyornis) was a flightless bird, larger than an ostrich at more than ten feet tall and weighed as much as half a ton, as contemporary accounts and bone fragments reveal. It became extinct in the mid 1600s, hunted out of existence by the inhabitants of Madagascar. The egg will be on sale for £5,000. Says John: "I am delighted to be offering for sale such an unusual antique. Today, collectors and interior decorators eagerly seek elephant bird eggs. They are certainly a major talking point in any home!"

Antiques for Everyone is widely regarded as a major international event for connoisseurs, collectors and trade buyers. The fair features more than 350 dealers from the UK, Europe and America and offers a huge range of exhibits to suit every pocket, from less than £10 to £100,000. It is a major forum and meeting place for the UK antiques trade.

Check to see if Complimentary Tickets are available for this antiques fair. CLICK HERE.

Looking For Anything In Particular?

Why not click to our new BLOG - GBAW On Sale - we've listed items that we have been asked to search for that are coming up for sale soon. The scam begins with a call from an individual claiming to be from the Security and Fraud Department at Visa or Mastercard and saying records have flagged up an unusual purchase pattern on the victim's card.

The criminals, whose activities have been reported to fraud experts, claim that an illegal purchase has been credited to the cardholder's account. The sophisticated fraudsters already know their victim's card number and the name of the bank that issued the card and ask the cardholder to confirm their home address.
Once the conmen have gained the cardholder's trust, they then ask them to read out the important three digit security number on the back of their credit card which they later use to charge illegal purchases to the card.

Credit card fraud experts are now warning cardholders to protect themselves against the scam and are advising the public not to reveal personal financial information to unsolicited callers over the phone.

Please use the email link below to forward this email to friends and family.

Antiques Dealers - Help Wanted

We are appealling to the antiques trade for help.

Having launched our Fundraising Challenge 2009 supporting the Children's Hospice in the Southwest of England (CHSW), we are calling on antiques dealers everywhere for help.

We have now taken our first delivery of coin collecting boxes, and we want to distribute as many as possible to antiques traders who have retail premises. In return you’ll receive a certificate direct from the Hospice confirming how much you have collected.

If you’d like to know more about our campaign, the Childrens Hospice Southwest and to help if you can please Click Here.
Very many thanks, your kind consideration is much appreciated.
Regards.
Ron.

Childrens Hospice Southwest
Little Bridge House,
North Devon.

Westonbirt Shool Antiques Fair, Add Tetbury Antiques Shops...

Just what we need to kick-off the New Year, set in the former magnificent manor house of the Holford family, Westonbirt School Antiques & Fine Art Fair opens for three days for what has gained the reputation of being as an excellent, quality event. The collection belongs to Terry Pearson and Susan Jeffrey who run Quadbod, the movie memorabilia specialists, and dates from the early 1920s.

The eighteen American 'insert' size posters are nostalgic reminders of the early years of Hollywood and together they highlight the names of many long forgotten actors who were stars of their time. Prices range from £250 to £600, depending on interest and condition. One fine example is a poster for the movie Nice People, a William DeMille (brother of Cecil B. DeMille) Production for Paramount from 1922 starring Bebe Daniels, Wallace Reid and Conrad Nagel, on sale for £500. Another is Paying the Piper, an Adolph Zukor Production from 1921 starring Dorothy Dickson and Alma Tell, on sale for £300. Also on offer will be Something to Think About (1920), a poster for an early Cecil B De Mille film that featured Gloria Swanson, who is pictured but not credited. While Satan Sleeps is a poster for a Western from 1922, and The Top of New York, also from a 1922 movie, one that starred May McAvoy who went on to act in the 1925 version of Ben Hur. Quadbod will be offering a range of later posters, all pre-dating 1990, including originals from My Fair Lady and A Star is Born, starring Judy Garland. (For a complete range of Quadbod posters and memorabilia please see http://www.quadbod.co.uk/.)

The Kensington Antiques & Fine Art Fair returns after two years absence to Kensington Town Hall. The fair features more than fifty specialist dealers from across Britain, offering a broad range of antiques and decorative pieces with a strong emphasis on individual style and design and particular appeal to collectors of rare and traditional antiques. The Fair will feature a strong contingent of dealers specialising in 20th century style and design, including Art Deco furniture, original movie posters, ceramics, bronze sculpture and works of art.

Organiser Caroline Penman from Penman Fairs explains: 'Today's home furnishers are looking to express their individuality through their choice of period and modern designer pieces, whether its antique or from the 20th century. People of all ages are showing a desire to make their own mark on their homes, to personalise their surroundings in a unique style and not to conform to the minimalist austere room settings of recent years. Our exhibitors will offer all kinds of interesting, rare and unusual items you will never find on the high street, which is why so many people like to shop with us.'' Prices will range from less than £50 to more than £25,000 with plenty of inexpensive objets d'art and collector's pieces at less than £300. The fair traditionally heralds the opening of the New Year season for the UK antiques trade with many American collectors and dealers in London for the winter sales. Most importantly, all exhibits will be strictly vetted for quality and authenticity. Many exhibitors will be specialising in interior furnishings and accessories. From West Sussex, well-known dealers Wakelin & Linfield will be showing a range of English town and country furniture and accessories including highly decorative folding screens and early 20th century framed hand-blocked period wallpapers by Sandersons (see image). Derbyshire dealer Peter Bunting promises a selection of early English furniture such as a fine pair of Charles II period armchairs to a Chinese red lacquered framed mirror from 1800 and a number of imposing portraits of 18th and 19th century ladies and gentlemen.

W.A.Pinn Antiques and Lennard Antiques from Essex will be showing a collection of the finest Georgian and early 19th century English country furniture and metalwork, while S. & S.Timms Antiques from Bedfordshire has Georgian and Victorian furniture for the dining-room and drawing-room, and Robin Little Antiques from Kent will be specialising in English and French furniture. Specialising in 20th century antiques and collector's items will be Andrew Muir from the Midlands, specialising in Art Novueau and Art Deco British and Continental ceramics. Original oils and watercolours will be represented by a number of specialists including London dealer Kaye Michie, showing works by Mabel Lucie Attwell, Helen Allingham, Robert Austin, Myles Birket Foster and Mary Fedden; and Ashleigh House Antiques from Essex, specialising in British and Irish oil paintings. Also exhibiting will be Mary Cooke Antiques, specialising in English silverware; Roger deVille from Staffordshire, specialising in early English pottery; Monika from Bath, with high quality 1920s and 30s costume jewellery by Coco Chanel, Tiffany and others; and Anthea AG Antiques from London with 19th and 20th century jewellery.

The Kensington Antiques & Fine Art Fair is a four-day event, open to the public every day. A restaurant is available for light meals and refreshments. Kensington Town Hall is located just a few minutes walk from Kensington High Street Underground and there is a spacious NCP car park beneath the Town Hall. A glass of wine, slice of cheese, it could be anything. Whatever it is it's usually a ploy to get you to buy whatever it is on offer. If you are a bit like me when someone says 'free' I usually go on the defensive, and quite right to. Like many I'm still seeking that free lunch!

So when I set about to design a FREE web links page for The Great British Antiques Web I had reservations. People will presume there's a catch I thought. But if we can deliver just one new visitor to a client's web site in six months that hasn't cost him or her anything then we've achieved something, not masses agreed but that visitor might turn out to be more than just a browser, who knows?

I'd like to enquire, can we link to your web site for six months? I promise it won't cost you a penny.

I mentioned at the beginning about free lunches that never materialise, and if by now you are like me you'll be saying, OK what's the catch? Well, none. Our offer is to provide a link to you for six months and after that if you wish us to withdraw our link then we will, end of story. Hopefully in six months we'll drive more than one visitor to your web site which will encourage you to want to keep your link in place. At this point, I want to continue to be up front with you and must in fairness bring charges into the conversation, and I want you to keep reading and not close this posting! So if an advertisement is proved to be working to a satisfactory level and delivering potential customers to your web site, you might just agree it's worth maintaining for £10 a year (plus vat).

If you're interested to follow-up our offer please click on the following link, from there you'll find a further link with more information and a form to submit your details online.
www.gbaw.co.uk/weblinks

If you agree that we can link to your web site, could you do one other thing for us please? Please copy this posting and send it to at least one 'Antiques' contact in your address book that you think would also be interested in our web link offer? After all, if it's a free offer why not share it with as many as you can.

Thanks for your interest, as always please do not hesitate to give me a call if you wish to discuss any of our services, in the meantime I'll look forward to hearing from you soon.

Welcome

Hi!
